A hobbyist has released a full C decompilation of the 1998 PlayStation classic Serial Experiments Lain by Pioneer LDC, complete with a native client for Windows, macOS, and Linux. For anyone interested in preservation and source ports, this project achieves a byte-identical rebuild of the retail executable.

Developer Y0oshi shared that 308 out of 321 functions now compile to the original bytes using the period toolchain consisting of GCC 2.8.1 and maspsx, split with splat. The remaining 13 functions still link from their original assembly. Progress is tracked on decomp.dev.

The new native client runs a 64-bit clean copy of the decompiled code on a reimplementation of the PlayStation SDK based on PsyCross. It handles its own CD streaming, XA ADPCM, SPU, and MDEC movie decoding. Timing was checked against Mednafen, meaning the client accurately reproduces the original hardware behavior where the node map takes four to eight vblanks per frame depending on Lain’s current animation. Quality-of-life additions include optional 60 fps interpolation, resolution scaling, standard .mcd memory card saves, disc swapping, and runtime English subtitles fetched from laingame.net.

Recomps and source ports are quietly changing how we interact with classic libraries, moving past traditional emulation into native execution. Projects like this prove that complex CD-ROM titles can get a second life with modern comforts while respecting original timing.

How to try it:

  1. Obtain your own Redump dumps of both game discs in .cue/.bin format, as no game assets are included.
  2. Download the latest release build from the GitHub releases page.
  3. Point the client to your dumps, which are verified by hash.
