Final Fantasy III SNES Disassembled and Undergoing C Reimplementation

Modder Givemesteak shares progress on a C source reimplementation of Final Fantasy III/VI for the SNES using custom tooling.

Modder Givemesteak has fully disassembled Final Fantasy III (or Final Fantasy VI) on the SNES, building an identical input ROM, and has started converting the game to C. Currently, about 1.2% of the game, translating to 8KB across 443 routines, has been rewritten in C while maintaining matching ROM hashes.

For hobbyists tracking retro decompilation projects, this approach stands out because the original game was written in hand-written 65816 assembly rather than high-level code. Givemesteak’s pipeline relies on a combination of Ghidra, Python scripts, Codex, emulators for inspection, and a custom setup using Clang alongside a personal 65816 code generator to make the compiled output match the original binaries byte-for-byte.

The project has already drawn scrutiny from community members regarding the feasibility of matching handwritten assembly via a custom C pipeline, contrasting it with existing efforts like snesrev’s smw repository and everything8215’s ff6 project.

How to try it or limitations:

  1. The source repository is not yet public because it currently contains copyrighted extracted game assets.
  2. The author plans to remove raw assets and release extraction scripts eventually, but no public release date or repository link is available yet.
