Windows games are now running directly on jailbroken PlayStation 5 hardware thanks to a new homebrew tool. Developer mpereiraesaa dropped version 0.1.0 of prospero-win, bringing its own copy of Wine straight to the console so no streaming PC is required.

Under the hood, 64-bit Windows programs run natively on the PS5’s x86-64 CPU, while 32-bit titles rely on an x86 translator. Graphics-wise, Direct3D 8 through 11 games draw through DXVK and Vulkan, alongside older OpenGL games, 2D titles, and GDI programs. Audio routes through the console’s standard output, and a built-in launcher handles game profiles for graphics and controls. Players can use a DualSense controller with Xbox-style XInput, rumble, and custom mouse-and-keyboard mappings, or plug in a USB keyboard and mouse directly.

Early testing shows titles like Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Half-Life, Counter-Strike 1.6, OpenArena, Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos, and Space Cadet Pinball are already working, though some need extra files like DXVK or LAV Filters in the game directory.

It’s still very experimental. Only one program runs at a time, meaning installers and games requiring external launchers won’t boot. There is also no support for 16-bit Windows or DOS apps, mouse wheels are broken, and anything with DRM or anti-cheat is completely off the table.

Compatibility layers pushing console hardware into general-purpose gaming rigs are moving fast. When a current-gen console starts running PC binaries bare-metal through translation, the walls between walled gardens get a lot blurrier.
