Sony’s dormant Ape Escape franchise, last seen in 2011, is reportedly coming back under Evening Star, the studio formed by developers behind Sonic Mania and Penny’s Big Breakaway. Industry veteran Jeff Gerstmann broke the rumor, with VGC saying they heard the same from their own sources.

The project sounds fresh out of the oven. Gerstmann noted it was seemingly just greenlit and sits in very early stages, meaning a release is nowhere near close. VGC also dropped hints that Sony might farm out other long-forgotten IPs to smaller third-party studios.

For anyone holding out hope for classic platformers to get a real second chance away from corporate limbo, handing the keys to the studio behind Sonic Mania is about as good as a rumor gets. No official word or confirmation from Sony yet, so don’t throw out your old DualShock controllers just yet.
